CPAP
What is CPAP ?
CPAP refers to a medical device called Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP). This device is used primarily as a treatment for people who suffer from a chronic pulmonary disorder such as sleep apnea and Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). CPAP is also used as a supporting device in the transition of patients in hospital from intubation to normal breathing state.
The CPAP device is composed from a box-shaped box positioned near the patient and a breathing mask connected to it by tubes. The device works by pumping pressurized air through the mask covering nose and mouth area while patient is asleep.
Some people suffer from an interruption of natural breathing during their sleep, this condition is called Sleep Apnea. The CPAP device treats this condition by using compressed air which helps keep the airways open and prevents them from collapsing. According to a patient's sleep study (Polysomnography) results, the amount of pressure generated by the CPAP device is adjusted to optimal level.
Sleep apnea is known to cause excessive sleepiness during the day. This is a most dangerous situation which often cause sufferers to be involved in car accidents as well as work related accidents. The CPAP device is an effective tool in preventing these wakefulness related incidents.
However, for a small percentage of CPAP users, the device (especially old model versions) actually causes insomnia and wakefulness issues. The CPAP device is noisy and quite uncomfortable making it difficult for users to fall asleep during the night. Modern CPAP devices are more comfortable and have a much quieter pumping action.
Even with the modern day technology improvements, the CPAP machines still suffer from many disadvantages such as causing:
- Noise related sleep interruption (Both for the user and his bed partner)
- Chronic nose congestion
- Eye and skin irritation
- Dry mouth
Some of these problems could be reduced by working together with a respiratory therapist.
Insurance companies usually subsidize some and sometimes all the CPAP device cost. However, if you would like to purchase a more modern CPAP device you would have to add the difference of cost yourself because the insurance companies cover only basic CPAP models.
The CPAP device works differently on each person so the level of effectiveness could vary. Although positive results are not guaranteed, satisfied users report being happy again as they find themselves once again feeling rested and refreshed.
