Stop Snoring -
The connection between obesity and snoring
The connection between obesity and snoring
I would like to share with an experience I had with one of my patients over the last 8 months. The story begins, as mentioned, 8 months ago when a 41 year-old patient of mine walked into my clinic accompanied by his wife. He reported having trouble focusing at work and that he feels sleepy most of the day. His wife also added that he is a loud snorer and occasionally chokes and gasps for air while sleeping.
Immediately, I understood that my patient suffers from sleep apnea. The most obvious reason for his apnea was his weight problem. My patient was 41 years old, 110 kilos and 165 centimeters high. That means his BMI (body mass index) was 40.4! Sleep apnea aside, his weight puts him at serious risk and I quickly recommended he lose weight and in addition, I sent him to a sleep study to further investigate his sleep apnea.
Unfortunately, the next available slot in the sleep study facility was in 4 months. However, my patient took my advice quite seriously and started losing weight… and fast. After a period of 3 months he walked into my clinic with a smile. At first, I did not even recognize him because he has lost an amazing 30 kilos. He told me he now exercises regularly with a personal trainer which also tells him what to eat and when to eat it. Although is still slightly overweight, his wife reports she no longer wakes up during the night because of his snoring.
I was quite amazed that his sleep apnea disappeared quite rapidly and I was very proud of him. Nevertheless, I still asked him to undergo the sleep study to determine his apnea really has gone away. Furthermore, I asked him to conduct a home sleep test in which he will record himself during his sleep. I was not disappointed and his home test showed that he no longer suffers from a sleep apnea and this indication was officially confirmed after his complete sleep study (polysomnography).
This story emphasizes how strong the link between obesity and snoring actually is. In case you suffer from a primary snoring problem or sleep apnea and you know that you have a weight problem… I highly recommend you go on a diet and start exercising. It will improve your health, make you live longer and possibly eliminate your snoring.
