Snoring health risks

We all know that snoring could be really annoying for the people we love and to ourselves. However, snoring is not all about the "sawing wood" sound. In fact, snoring is often an indicator of a serious health problem being present. It is very important for you to understand and recognize any snoring related medical conditions. By learning the causes of snoring and could snoring mean, you are taking the first steps towards peaceful nights and a healthier life.

It might come as a surprise but one out of every three people snore at some level during his sleep. While we sleep, our body muscles relax and unwind and those include our breathing related muscle tissue such as the ones in our mouth, throat and nose. The relaxation of our throat muscle tissues such as the soft palate and tongue together with the passage of air while we breathe generate a vibration which results in a snore. Interestingly, the less tense is the muscle the louder the snore gets.

There are several reasons for snoring:

  • Obesity - extra body fat builds up in throat thereby narrowing the airway and increases the chance of snoring.

  • Physical structure - Extended uvula, enlarged tonsils and adenoids can lead to a certain airway obstruction.

  • Deviated septum - People who have a deviated septum usually have trouble breathing through their noses thereby increasing the chance of snoring.

  • Alcohol and drug abuse - Alcohol, like many other tranquilizing drugs, cause the muscle to "over-relax" thus generating vibration.

A more serious condition is Sleep apnea. While sleeping, People who suffer from sleep apnea stop breathing for several seconds due to some kind of airway obstruction. Besides snoring, these breathing pauses often cause the person to gasp or choke while he fights for air. This is a very serious condition which can lead to heart disease, high blood pressure and strokes.

Snoring is treatable, on all levels. It is a question of perseverance and having the motivation of looking for an effective treatment that suits you. If you snore on a daily basis you should do yourself (and your loved ones) a favor and go pay your doctor a visit.
